Become a Central Library Docent and share your love of the library with others. The 5-week docent training starts in September 2025. Interested volunteers can apply below.
What does a docent do?
The Central Library Docents are volunteers who primarily conduct one-hour public tours focused on the art, architecture, and history of our landmark downtown library. Docents give scheduled tours to walk-in visitors and for groups, clubs, students, researchers, and special interest groups.
Who are the Central Library Docents?
The Central Library Docents formed in 1980 as a nonprofit organization. There are currently about 25 actively touring docents. Their backgrounds and ages are diverse, but everyone loves the Central Library and being immersed in the lore of the magnificent building and its rich and dynamic resources.
How can I become a docent?
Please fill out an application to join our next docent training, which runs for 5 sessions beginning in September 2025. The training program features a combination of slide lectures, detailed tours of the library building, and practice touring. After you submit your application, we will contact you to set up a brief interview sometime in July or August.
What will I learn?
Trainees receive an intensive introduction to the art and design of the 1926 Goodhue building, the 1993 Bradley wing, and the McGuire gardens. The five-week training includes classroom and on-site education. Training materials cost $25. (Scholarships are available.) After attending the training, future docents are paired with a docent mentor to learn the ropes of giving tours. In addition to touring, the docents gather for seasonal parties, field trips, monthly board meetings, special programs, and continuing education.

2025 Docent training class sessions, taught by a team of experienced docent educators, are scheduled for the following Sundays from 1:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m:
Classes occur in Meeting Room A at the Central Library, 630 5th St, downtown Los Angeles. Parking under the building on Sundays is available for a dollar a day with validation showing your library card.
